Do Big Cats Like Marmite?
Have you ever wondered whether big cats like Marmite? If not why not?! For those who don’t know what Marmite is, it’s a brown goo that is made from yeast extract and salt. It’s very popular amongst some people here in the UK (and in Australia where it is known as Vegemite).
We at udopt are split with some loving marmite on toast and others finding it hard to understand how anyone could like it! This love or loathe feeling has become known as the marmite effect! In fact we’d love to hear whether you are a marmite fan or a marmite hater?!
If the taste can split humans – what about big cats like tigers and leopards? Do you think they would like a spot of Marmite? Well the answer here is in this short video made by Big Cat Rescue and it must be said that I personally think these large cats have better taste than Marmite loving Brits.
The most common response by the big cats was disgust which was then followed by what is called a flehmen response. This is when the cat opens its mouth and smells an odour using the Jacobson’s organ that is located in the roof of its mouth. If you have a pet cat then you may have seen them do this. Cats usually smell the urine left by other cats using the Jacobson’s organ. Since none of the cats liked it, with the lion almost attacking the Marmite carrying human, it can be concluded that Marmite smells worse than pee!
The makers of the video reckon no cats were harmed during the making of the video, but we think some of their taste buds may have been temporarily!
