The run up to Christmas can now officially start after John Lewis released their seasonal advert – and yes it’s a tear jerker! Last year we had a bear in the woods backed by a Lily Allen tune. This is the funniest video we’ve seen in a while. You may remember Miley Cyrus causing quite a stir with her twerking at the MTV awards with Robin Thicke. Well how about a turtle that loves a twerk? Just add water! Cowabunga dudes!
According to the results of a new study undertaken by WWF and ZSL, it is estimated that the total number of fish, birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians fell by an astonishing 52 per cent between 1970 and 2010. To reiterate that’s 52% of wildlife lost in the last 40 years.
The obvious question to ask is what caused such a massive decline? It may not surprise you that the main culprits are humans. Through hunting, fishing, deforestation, pollution and other types of habitat destruction we have contributed a major part to this loss of wildlife.
Udopt.co.uk ran a World Cup prize draw earlier in the year to give our udopt fans the the chance to win a cash donation for their favourite charity. All you had to do was like us on Facebook, twitter or sign up to our mailing list to be entered into the prize draw. In fact if you did all 3 you had 3 chances to win!
First out of the hat as our lucky winner was Nikki Lawley. She decided to give the £207 prize (related to the amount of goals scored at the World Cup*) to her designated charity of Hounds for Heroes. They are a charity started in February 2010 with the aim of training dogs to assist injured and disabled men and women who worked in the Armed Forces and emergency services.
We’ve all seen Jaws (and sharknado!) – sharks kill lots of humans right? Wrong. Very wrong! Each year around 12 people are killed by shark attacks. Over that same period some 100 million sharks are killed annually by humans. Sharks are killed for their fins (for shark fin soup) at a most terrifying rate. In fact – for every human killed by a shark last year (12) we kill that many every four seconds! Take a look at this infographic below which shows you this in graphic format. It’s actually pretty scary.
Here at udopt we are huge fans of the honey badger – the world’s craziest animal! There was a recent documentary on the BBC which had some incredibly footage of honey badgers in action. This clip of a honey badger shows the many ways it tries to get out of it’s enclosure – including using a rake as a ladder!
