Man Gets Bitten In The Stomach By A Nurse Shark

Ervin McCarty was snorkelling and attempting retrieve a grouper that had been speared and was located in a hole when he suddenly found himself bitten by a nurse shark in the abdomen that refused to let go. Mr McCarty was driving with a group of friends in the Florida Keys just days before Hurricane Irma last month. He has been asked by the captain of the boat he had been travelling on to help get a grouper that a spear fisherman had shot out of a hole.

The shark just came at him

Mr McCarty said as soon as he reached the spot where the grouper was, the shark came at him from another hole and bit him. The shark obstinately refused to let him go, so Mr McCarty said he held it as tight as possible with both of his hands so that the shark did not rip his stomach open. His next problem was reaching the surface so he could breathe whilst the shark was pulling him down. The battle was so intense Mr McCarty thought he would end up drowning. To make matters worse once he managed to reach the surface he saw the boat had floated away and whilst the other members of the group were shouting that he had bitten, no one in the group realised the shark was still attached to him.

Tiring experience

He was forced to swim to the boat without using his hands which was extremely tiring and wore him out. He eventually managed to get himself back aboard the boat and you can see what happened next in the video. The other members of the group could not stop laughing over his predicament, with one person asking him if it had bitten him in a sensitive area. Fortunately for Mr McCarty that was not the case but the shark was still firmly attached to his stomach and Mr McCarty did not appear to appreciate the joke.

They killed the shark

Finally, someone killed the nurse shark using a knife which caused it to momentarily let go and then it bit Mr McCarty for a second time on his side. This time however, he was easily able to pry the nurse shark free and push it off. The man who helped out told Mr McCarty he was the only person he knew that has been bitten by a shark.
