A person on safari in Kenya happened to be in the right place at the right time was able to capture on video an attempt by a lion to attack a baby elephant. Fortunately for the little fella, mamma elephant was on high alert and managed to drive away the big cat before any damage could be done.
Calf was only a day old
If you watch the short video you will see the elephant which has been named Nablu by researchers studying her, walking with her day-old calf in the middle of January in Kenya’s world-famous Samburu National Reserve. A lion approaches the mother and child from the rear and then charges them as if it is about to make a meal of the baby elephant.
Lions are no match for an angry mamma elephant
Fortunately for the calf, its mother quickly turns on the lion and charges at it scaring it away due to her sheer size and a loud trumpet. The lion then flees without ever getting near the new born elephant. According to the person who posted the video, this is apparently the first time a lion has been filmed stalking and attacking an elephant calf in Samburu National Reserve.
