A few months ago, Cody Wabiszewski decided to swap his desk job for a boat in Florida. The one-time aerospace engineer no longer sits staring at a computer screen all day but instead spends his time working at a dive shop and uses his days off to go scuba diving off the Florida Keys. Mr Wabiszewsk says the choice was simple, he really did not dig the cubicle life and prefers to be out on a boat everyday and has even obtained his captain’s license recently.
Unexpected encounter
Recently Mr Wabiszewski was working towards getting advanced scuba certification with a few other divers under the watchful gaze of the boat’s captain. The group were diving at a site where there has been a ship intentionally placed on the sea bed as part of an Artificial Reef Association project. It was here that Mr Wabiszewski has an unexpected encounter. The group was about 70 feet under the surface of the ocean when a friend motioned to him and showed him a large shadow that he soon understood to be a great white shark. The 15-foot predator began to circle the dive group as school of fish surrounded it.
First time swimming with a great white
Mr Wabiszewski said it was an extraordinary sight, extremely beautiful and something you only dream of seeing. It was the first time he had ever swam with a great white. The shark was at one point less than 15 feet away from the group and Mr Wabiszewski adds he has always wanted to go cage diving but going cageless seems far more fun. The instructor motioned for the group to stay where they were and warned them not to make any sudden movements. Apparently bubbles scare sharks, so Mr Wabiszewski says he was trying to stay down so that the shark would stick around for a bit longer.
Pulled out his camera
After he started to feel a little safer the diver pulled out his underwater camera in order to capture some footage and posted a three-minute long Facebook video which has gone viral. The video shows the group surfacing with the captain shouting at them to get back on the boat. Now that he has more experience diving, Mr Wabiszewski says he intends to do more deep-sea diving in the hopes he spots another great white. He adds that on this occasion the shark displayed no hints of aggression and just seemed curious. However, he warns that great whites are extremely unpredictable so if you see one, don’t be silly, be careful, keep your distance and do not approach.
