Prince William Wants Royal Ivory Collection To Be Destroyed
Prince William AKA the Duke of Cambridge wants the royal collection of ivory which is stored in Buckingham Palace to be removed and destroyed according to reports.
According to a newspaper report in the Independent, Prince William is backing an anti elephant poaching and told expert Jane Goodall that he would “like to see all the ivory owned by Buckingham Palace destroyed”.
The Buckingham Palace collection contains over 1,200 exhibits some of which date back centuries.
Over the last few years, Prince Charles is supposed to have asked for all ivory items stored atr both Highgrove and Clarence House to also be removed.
Zac Goldsmith a Conservative MP hailed the move saying it there is no greater symbol against the horrors of ivory than Buckingham Palace destroying its own collection.
Dr. Paula Kahumbu said it sends a powerful message and is a demonstration of the Royal family putting their money where their mouth is.
A spokesperson for the prince would not confirm or deny any comments he may have made on the topic.
Recently the Duke of Cambridge lent his support to a campaign against elephant poaching when he addressed a gathering of top conservationists that had been assembled by his United for Wildlife organisation.
During his speech both he and his father urged the world to reject illegally traded animal parts such as rhino horn and ivory.
In January Princes William, Charles and Harry as well as the Prime Minister were in attendance at the world’s biggest conference on the illegal wildlife trade which was held in London.
46 states and 11 international organisations attended the conference where leaders agreed to take steps to protect threatened animals from poachers.
The illegal trade in wildlife such as elephant tusks and rhino horn is estimated to be worth £11.5bn each year
