The tiger is the largest of the big cat family. Instantly recognisable by its black stripes over orangey brown fur.
Tigers are apex predators, mainly hunting deer and wild boar. They are usually solitary requiring large territories as their habitat. Tiger cubs can stay with their mother for up to 2 years before being independent and finding their own territory.
In the past 100 years, tiger populations have lost over 90% of their historic range. Now they are found in fragmented habitats ranging from Siberian forests in the north to subtropical and tropical forests on the Indian subcontinent and Sumatra.
Tigers are listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List.
