Seals and Sea Lions are among the best loved of all wild animals. Playful and curious by nature, these supremely adapted marine mammals spend most of their time at sea, out of sight of humans. Despite their charm, all species have suffered exploitation, in some cases to near extinction, as a result of man’s greed for fur and flesh. Today, most species are protected by law and many populations are now recovering.
Until recently little was know about these enigmatic creatures, but scientists have developed techniques which enable them to follow seals into their own world, giving us a magical insight into the mysteries of their lives beneath the ocean waves.
Did you know?
- Seals are fin footed animals that can live both on land and at sea across the globe.
- There are 33 different species of seal, but only 2 that live around the UK. The most popular in our waters is the grey seal, who live and breed around Scotland. They are slightly larger than an average seal, and their number are increasing by up to 7% a year, so are no risk to endangerment.
- Grey seals can live to over 40 years of age, and have a thick layer of blubber around their bodies to help protect them from the cold. This restricts blood flow to the skin to stop internal body heat from being released.
- Their whiskers are super sensitive, and can be used to detect prey whilst in the water. They can also dive underwater for really long periods of time, with certain seals down there for nearly two hours!
- The seal originally evolved from land animals, which is the reason why many species give birth on the shore. They come in all shapes and sizes, with the elephant seal is the largest on the planet. This absolute whopper can grow up to 13 feet long, and weigh up to 2 tons!
