Our Giraffe Says…

Nice to meet you, I’m a Rothschild giraffe, and I’m the tallest animal on the planet! Unfortunately, there are less than 650 of us left in the wild, and if we don’t receive some help soon we may become extinct. If you could sponsor me that would be really nice, as we need more human kindness to ensure we can stabilise our numbers and remain a part of the planet’s population.

adopt a giraffe and receive

  • Free entry to an Aspinall Foundation Park to see some amazing animals.
  • An e-gift pack that contains a computer desktop wallpaper, animal facts, an adoption certificate as well as a monthly e-newsletter.
  • Twice yearly updates on how your animal is doing and the work the Aspinall Foundation are providing to help their fight for survival.

udopt'r choice

The Rothschild giraffe lives in hot climates and is a very sociable animal that lives in herds of up to 15. They are completely vegetarian, and use their long tongues to pick leaves from the tall trees. They are very quiet animals, and only really make a sound if danger approaches. They have amazing hearing and vision, and are one of the few animals on the planet that have horns.

udopt it because

  • There are only 650 rothschild giraffes left in the wild, and their numbers are diminishing rapidly.
  • The giraffe is a truly amazing creature, and one of the most unique animals walking the planet. With their amazingly long neck (great for eating leaves from the trees), gentle nature and awesome camouflage coat, the giraffe is certainly one in a million in the animal kingdom.
  • Giraffe numbers have fallen dangerously low over time, and now conservation groups need to work hard to ensure their survival. Can you imagine a world without giraffes? Neither can we.
  • There is a choice of 4 different types of adoption to suit the amount your wish to give, which makes this a gift that can be given more easily than others.
  • Receive FREE entry to an Aspinall Foundation Park.
  • Adoption programmes start from as little as £3.50 a month.

Did you know?

  • Even though they are much longer, giraffes have the same number of bones in their neck as humans.
  • A baby giraffe is a whopping 6ft tall when it’s born!
  • A giraffe’s heart weighs 24 pounds (almost two stone), and they can reach a height of 18 feet, making them by far the tallest animal on the planet.
  • Their name means ‘one who walks swiftly, a camel marked like a leopard’, and they actually do have small humps on their backs.
  • Their necks alone can extend up to six foot in length.
  • Their coats are a bit like human fingerprints, no two are the same, making them completely individual. Also, the darker the spots on the coat, the older the giraffe is.
  • Giraffes have 4 stomachs, the same as a cow – yet only have to drink every couple of days. They actually receive most of their required moisture from the plants that they eat.
  • Even though they are really tall, they can run up to speeds of 35 miles per hour, but can’t keep up that kind of pace for long!

Giraffe information

Everything about a giraffe – its extraordinary long neck, distinctive camouflage, graceful movement and friendly nature – is instantly recognizable. Consequently the giraffe has fascinated man throughout its history, with its quiet and lofty stance representing in the human psyche virtue, peace and harmony.

Their name, Giraffa Camelopardalis, means ‘one who walks swiftly, a camel marked like a leopard’. Like camels, giraffes have a ‘small’ hump on their backs and can go without drinking water for long periods due to their succulent diet of Acacia leaves, but this is where the similarity ends.

Baby giraffe or ‘calf’ drops head first to the ground from a height of about six feet at birth, which causes it to take its first big breath. Newborns are up and walking around after about one hour. Adult giraffes are too large for most predators but the young can fall prey to lions, leopards and hyenas. Up to half of all giraffe calves never reach adulthood.

Once roaming the Great Plains of Africa in huge herds, giraffe numbers have greatly diminished and they are now entirely dependent on humanity for their survival.
